Author Interview with Melanie Robertson-King

Quote

I’ve never done this before so I hope you’ll bear with me whilst I work my way through this new territory. I’ve read lots of author interviews so how hard can it be? Maybe I’m nervous because my first interview is with Melanie. After all, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her. She created my character.

Anyway, I’ve managed to catch Melanie between events and she’s agreed to this last minute idea of mine, so (gulp) here we go. Over to you, Melanie.

Thanks for inviting me to talk to your followers, Sarah.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing the summer after I finished what you would call primary school. Here in Canada it would be grade 8. Before I started penning my own stories, I read anything and everything I could get my hands on.

Before A Shadow in the Past, did you have any of your writing published?

It wasn’t until 2001 but yes. My first published article appeared in The Scottish Banner. It was about William Quarrier, the founder of The Orphan Homes of Scotland. I sent the article off and never heard anything. You can imagine my surprise when my copy of the Banner arrived (I subscribed to it) and there was my article – a two page spread!

All of my non-fiction work has been historical in nature, as is a portion of A Shadow in the Past. Believe it or not, I hated history in school and was ever so glad to be able to drop it after my second year in secondary school.

There’s all this talk out there about author brand. Do you have one?

If we can insert my cover image in here, I’ll try to explain my 4RV Publishing created brand.

A-Shadow-in-the-Past-by-Melanie-Robertson-KingIn this cover, the transparent band at the top and bottom of the cover image creates the brand. So, with any other projects that pertain to YA Paranormal/time-travel published by 4RV, I see the same font used, my name at the top and the title at the bottom in the same format as here. I see the mirror playing an important role in book two as well. Think author name in the top band as in this cover and title in the bottom band… see where I’m going?

When people see this style, they’ll know it’s me.

But I have another author brand, too. This one is completely different.

The Consequences CollectionThis is my King Park Press brand… author name at the bottom and title at the top, still with the hyphenated surname which is the combination of my maiden name and my married name.

Wow! I didn’t think it was so complicated. I’m glad you explained it. What are your next projects? And can you give us a hint to the content?

I’m working on the sequel to A Shadow in the Past. And no content hints… aka spoilers. I can say that I see the cover being similar in that the ‘brand’ will be the same and my idea of the perfect cover will be a reverse of this… you in the present looking in the mirror and seeing yourself in the past but there will be two, very important characters with you but their reflections will be transparent.

I can’t wait for the sequel to be published. You have an image in mind for the cover, what about the title?

Currently, the working title for the sequel is Shadows from her Past. It fits really well with the storyline.

Oooh… sounds like it will be a fab read. Any idea when it will be out?

Don’t get too excited. I’ve not got the first draft finished yet. I’ve got about 62,000 words done (which includes the ending) but there’s still stuff I want to add to it.

Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to drop by, Melanie. I always thought being a character was far easier than being the writer and now I know for sure that I’m right.

The Consequences Collection – by Melanie Robertson-King

Melanie has a new book out (it’s been out for a while, I’m just remiss in posting about it). Isn’t that exciting? This one is different from A Shadow in the Past. Her new one is a collection of short stories called The Consequences Collection.

I’m all a-quiver waiting for her to unwrap the finished product. Hurry up! We want to see it.
Wrapping The Consequences Collection books 3 books 4Oh wow! Look at it. It’s gorgeous! Spooky, too. Here’s what it’s about.

Blurb:

The Consequences Collection is an eclectic compilation of twelve stories ranging from non-fiction through creative non-fiction to pure fiction, in prose and poetry.

The story of a Scottish Home Child is based on fact and told from the child’s point of view; The Mystery Woman of Kinettles is a non-fiction article on the appearance and subsequent disappearance of a woman’s body near the Wellington County House of Industry (Poor House) in 1879 Southwestern Ontario.

Some of these stories are lighter than others, and some might even beg you to leave the lights on.

The Consequences CollectionWonder if she’ll give a snippet of one of the stories in it? Yay! She said yes!

Excerpt from the cover story Consequences:

Splat! The mail landed on the ceramic tile floor of the foyer. Usually, the noise was followed by the snap of the mail slot door closing. Today it wasn’t.

Something must have stuck in it. Sylvia put her coffee down on the counter and walked to the front door. A large white envelope remained suspended in the door. She pulled it the rest of the way through. The flap snapped shut and even though she was used to hearing the metallic sound, it startled her.

She’d expected a letter from her solicitor regarding her divorce from Bill but it wasn’t there. However, that one in particular had piqued her curiosity. Emblazoned on the top left corner was an official-looking crest. The addressee’s name and address were correct. It was her. Why would this person or agency be sending her a letter? She’d never heard of them before.

Sylvia turned the envelope over and worked her thumb under the flap. Those self-sticking envelopes are a bugger, she thought as she tried to rip it open. Finally, she gave up and tore down the side and yanked the contents out.

She skimmed over the letter but it didn’t make any sense so placed it on the small table by the door. It could be dealt with later. In the meantime, she looked at the rest of her mail. Nothing else untoward – just the electric bill, gas bill, and the usual assortment of junk – mail. She dropped them on top of the letter and returned to the kitchen.

The coffee she’d poured earlier had gone cold. She dumped it down the sink and turned the water on to rinse it away before getting a fresh one.

Drawn by some inexplicable force, Sylvia went back to the foyer and collected the letter and the mangled envelope. She returned to the kitchen, flipped on the radio and sat down at her small table. Why had she opened it in the first place? She should have just binned it. That’s what she usually did with unsolicited mail. But there was something strangely familiar about it. The addressee information was on a computer printed label so there was no clue there. The sororities from University had crests or emblems to differentiate one from another. She wracked her brain trying to remember what they looked like. It had been over thirty years since she’d attended. Sylvia never belonged to a sorority because she thought the girls who did were snooty and stuck-up.

She’d call her friend, Laurie and tell her about the letter. They’d been friends since childhood, attended the same elementary and secondary schools and even the same University. She could tell her anything, couldn’t she?

The Three-Fold Cover Story

Never judge a book by its cover, or so they say. I think that’s a highly debatable position! Book covers matter. Here’s my cover story!

Authors and publishers alike expend considerable effort on creating eye-catchy covers that zzzzing! Evidently, I’m no exception. Each cover for the three books in my Rock Star Romance Trilogy was carefully designed. Individually, they’re awesome! But in their togetherness… WOW!

NickyWells_Border_
I have to confess, I’m a little in love with how they work side by side. (Okay, a lot in love then. I admit it.) They show Sophie’s story in a nutshell. There’s a progression there, an evolution, that is quite deliberate.

Consider this. In the first book, Sophie’s Turn, Sophie still very much finds herself drawn to the glitz and glamor surrounding that rock star of hers, the dangerous and delectable Dan Hunter. But throughout the book, Sophie gets to know him—and herself!—much better than she’d ever dared dream, and this produces the ‘turn’ at the end.

In book two, Sophie’s Run, Dan becomes Sophie’s friend while she’s in pursuit of someone else. Quite unexpectedly, Dan finds himself in a position of unrequited love. He has to think up ways to keep their friendship alive. Their joint recording of his duet right there in his home studio is one of the key moments in the novel and eventually builds a bridge right into book three. So the sound recording equipment on the cover says, hey, look, there are rock starry things being done here! Yet it hints at the ‘detour’ Sophie’s life is taking and lays the foundations for the final book.

Enter the cover for Sophie’s Encore. There he is, Dan, right on the cover, toned bare arms and all, singing his heart out in all his delicious rock-star glory. The title promises us another go, an encore—but what will it mean, and how will it work? Will Dan and Sophie get a second chance? And what will Dan have to do to make that happen? Between you and me, Sophie’s Encore might equally have been titled, Dan’s Encore, for this book is about the both of them and whether they can bring their romance to a happy ending.

And there you have it! See what I mean about the Cover Story? What do you think?

Melanie’s Trip – Day 3 – Fort William to Dufftown

Fort William to Dufftown
We woke this morning to sunshine and blue sky – a wonderful start to the day. However, the low hanging clouds loomed nearby shrouding the tops of the mountains. After the first day, we knew all too well what that meant. However, we didn’t come to Scotland for the weather.

As we got further inland, the skies cleared even more and it became a gorgeous day for travelling. Not too hot, not too cool. Just right. We stopped just past the town of Laggan at the dam since the sun was out so bright at the time.

Something else I had wanted to see for some time after seeing it online was the old bridge at Carrbridge. Since we had plenty of time, we made the side trip into the community in search of the bridge but even more importantly, the much-needed WC, which was easier to find than the bridge – thankfully.

For us, no trip to Scotland would be complete without a visit to an old churchyard and some sculptured stones. We got both at the Inveravon churchyard. The sculptured stones were secured away from the elements inside an alcove in the church.

Once we arrived in Dufftown, we stopped at Balvenie Castle even though we had visited there in the past. We rejoined Historic Scotland (after letting our memberships lapse a few years ago) before we came over so it was time to start using it to our advantage.

After we established the location of our B&B – Fernbank House – we decided to take a distillery tour since we had plenty of time before we had to check in. We waffled at bit on which one we’d go to, Cardhu or Glenlivet and for today, the latter won.

The Glenlivet Distillery

At the end of the tour we got to sample the product. We’ve both had the 12 year old Glenlivet so I chose the 15 year old and Don the 18 year old. I could only have the smallest of portions since I’m the driver when we’re in Scotland so I had not even a full mouthful of mine and an even smaller taste of Don’s but man was it smooth. We enjoyed it so much we bought a bottle. Will it make it home with us? Not likely, but that’s another story.
After our distillery tour, we checked in to Fernbank House.

Once we were checked in, we walked back into Dufftown (about a 20 minute jaunt) where we had chicken curry and sticky toffee pudding for dessert at The Stuart Arms Bar & Restaurant. Good thing we were on foot. We needed to walk off all those calories… LOL!

Tomorrow we’re off to Kennethmont but are hoping to do a few other things before our arrival there since it’s so close. The Cardhu Distillery is one our stops, possibly up to the location of the asylum in A Shadow in the Past, Auchindoin Castle, the Gartly and Insch churchyards. But that’s another day.

When a contemporary teen is transported back through time to the Victorian era, she becomes A Shadow in the Past…

Nineteen-year-old Sarah Shand finds herself thrust back into the past. There she struggles to keep her real identity from a society that finds her comments and ideas strange and her speech and actions forward, unlike Victorian women. When Sarah verbally confronts confining social practices, including arranged marriages; powerful enemies commit her to a lunatic asylum. After falling in love with the handsome Laird of Weetshill, Robert Robertson, she must decide whether to find her way back to her own time or to remain in the past with him.
